OUGD602: My Brand- Revisiting

It had been a long time since I last looked at my personal branding and attempted to do something with it. When I looked back over what I had previously created, there were some things I liked, others that I really didn't. I still felt the whole thing lacked a 'wow' factor and I believe I was far too focused on creating a logo or mark that I forgot to ask myself 'why do I actually need branding? What will I use it for?'

Honestly, after a lot of things I had achieved and done I really don't know what I want to do, and so what I will need branding for. However directly after uni I feel I will try and set up a small business making things, selling prints etc as well as finding work experience in all manner of things from print technician to graphic design to illustration. And so if I am going to create a brand the it needs to be a versatile one, at least for the time being.

I thought carefully over what my brand would need and how I wanted to represent myself. Over the course of the year I have spoken to a few professionals about portfolios and showing work and a consistent piece of feedback is that people like to see sketches. How you can visualise an idea and if you have the ability to draw. So I decided to run with this and use it as the main part of my branding.

So my idea was this- create a pattern out of a collection of my sketches from various briefs over the year and use this pattern on any materials I choose to create.

What I aim to create (at least for submission) is a business card, a CV and a small collection of print packs which can be adjusted and tailored depending on who or where I am send them too. When Dr Me came to visit they discussed mailers and how making something unique can get a studios attention. This print pack will be the equivalent of my mailer, with customer prints to send to different studios. If it's a branding studio I will send prints of logos, postcards, brands implemented onto designs to show my branding skills. If it's a print workshop I will send screen printed designs and images to demonstrate my printing skills. And if it's for an illustration agency or studio I will send illustrative based pieces. This was I can keep all of my options open and make them specific as and when I need to.
