On a random Wednesday I took a wander down to the Tetley to have a look at their latest exhibitions. I had been informed that there were some more graphic design based exhibitions going on and so I was keen to have a look around.
The first exhibition picture book was a collection of hand bound and individually created picture books, some were for children, others were more varied and artistic, though they featured a wide variety of binding methods. The different varieties explored a wide range of story telling ideas, from the literal to the abstract.
The second exhibition and the main event was 'Winter Garden' which featured a massive palm tree illustration installed across a vast and tall wall. It was a pretty breath taking sight, bringing a sense of summer and warmth on top of a cold grey wall in the midst of cold grey weather. Not overly summery but enough to hint at warmth and sunshine to come.
Another section of the gallery (which I couldn't find a name for) homed a collection of various books and prints, including one massive book which unfortunately I was banned from touching. The collection showed off a range of different layout and binding styles which I found inspiring to look at. It's made me want to get back into binding again, definitely.
I do love the Tetley, as a building it is a wonderful building, however over the past two years I have found issues with their use of space. The empty hallways and collection of three rooms feels very awkward and disjointed. The artwork doesn't particularly flow well and I'm uncertain from time to time if I'm entering a new collection/exhibition every time I step through a door. If they made better use of the space outside of all the rooms and better labeled the collections they house in the rooms then it could work so much better.
