After completing the poster and having it hung in the hallway for the week I decided there was more I wanted to achieve from this mini brief. Last year for PPP I set up a business with three others that made and sold uniquely design prints and soft furnishings. Looking at the repeat mermaid pattern I had created I felt that this is something that would suit the type of market I had looked into last year. So I took my designs and decided to print them onto fabric to create a small cushion.
This also worked as an experiment for testing out digitally printed fabric- something I had wanted to do for a while but never had the time or opportunity. So I arranged the design and got it printed onto fabric.
From here I went on to hand stitch the cushion, I had wanted to produce it on a sewing machine, however my sewing machine is abysmal and so it worked out quicker to hand stitch the components together.
Although the pattern was clearly derived from the poster design the balance of white type was missing from the final design. So I chose to add a white heart stitched onto the front of the cushion this tied the design closer to the original poster by balancing a pattern with blocks of white.
