Triptych is a miniature exhibition held in within Leeds College of Art organised by Kieran Walsh and featuring three different third year students each week. The goal for each student is to prepare an A1 poster design to be featured in the exhibition alongside two other students.
The idea is to show off your individual style and to have a small brief for each of us to work on that is simple, fun and with few limitations on what can and can't be done. Each trio of students have been grouped together because of their similar styles/work ethic and the set of posters can be done on a theme, as part of a set or as a stand alone individual image. The two other's featuring in my week will be Beth Taylor and Jess Wood.
The deadline for our three posters is on the 1st of March, in order to be ready and printed for the 7th. In order to put aside plenty of design time I went ahead and organised a quick meeting with Beth and Jess in order to discuss a potential theme for our images.
We felt that 'Hand Made' would make a good theme for us as we are all very hands on creative people. Beth participates in a lot of hand rendered type, Jess is an avid illustrator and produces illustrations from a variety of mediums including needle and thread images, and I love to draw and illustrate both physically and digitally, making it a common theme through a lot of my work.
We decided that hand made elements could be applied at any stage of the process, and due to a lack of time I decided that for me, the final A2 poster design would be a digitally rendered version of something previously hand drawn.
For my design I wanted to produce something a little bit witty that reflected my personality and so went with the idea of a quotation poster. As an avid pop culture fan it made sense to search through lines within a television show that made me laugh. This also gave me a good excuse to watch episodes of my favourite series as research.
The show I finally landed on was Parks and Recreation, I am a massive fan of the show and Leslie Knope is a little bit of a hero to me. Through out the show the main character Leslie calls her friend Ann a wonderful series of names, such as 'Oh Ann, you beautiful rule breaking moth' or 'Ann you beautiful spinster, I will find you love'. This repeating gag never failed to make me chuckle and so my quote is taken from my favourite one of these names.
For this brief I didn't want to waste too much time with sketches and research and so only drew four very rough ideas to visualise some of my initial thoughts. I ended up choosing the idea with a combination of type and image, giving me the opportunity to hand render both. I haven't decided on a final layout as of yet and will wait until I can see all elements digitised before setting anything in stone.
